Chapter 14

“Are you going to share any of that?” Dallas balanced on her hind legs to see Cas’ fudge sundae better. Then she looked over her shoulder at Echo. “Is she going to share?”

“I doubt it. She has some silly idea that cats shouldn’t have ice cream,” Echo scoffed.

“Dairy,” Cas corrected around a mouthful of sweetness. “And you guys didn’t have the long, disappointing day that I had. I deserve this.”

“You’re no closer to solving the mystery, huh?” Dallas settled back onto her haunches but kept her sharp eyes on Cas’ bowl.

“Nope. Not only that, but I’m no closer to solving my own problem with the OSSR.” Cas stuffed another spoonful into her mouth and savored the warm fudge, sweet cream, and crunchy nuts. “I just wasted a bunch of time today, really.”

“They didn’t help you at the office?” Echo cocked his head.

“No. Everybody was going crazy there when I stopped by. They were all getting ready to go out and search for a leashed witch who had dropped off the radar for a long time and resurfaced today, I guess.” She pushed aside the empty bowl and wiped her mouth. “Plus, we gained another murder victim today, but I’ve run out of suspects. Well, almost.”

She got up and paced to the front window and then back again. “Maybe I’m on the wrong track altogether. I know it’s crazy because they’re all gone, but the name Wolf keeps coming up like they’re sending messages from the grave.” She paced a few more times, thinking, and then stopped and watched Dallas lick her paw for a minute. “You know, I also find it really odd that three people connected by an old scandal in Crystal Springs are all going to be ambassadors for the Games.”

Dallas lowered her paw. “What do you think your next step will be?”

Cas had no idea what to do next, but before she could say that, Echo interrupted. “Oh! Speaking of the ambassadors, Minerva called and left a weird message for you earlier.”

“What? Echo! You have to do better at telling me these things right away. What was the message?”

His whiskers twitched. “I forget. I had Obe write it down for you—it’s in your inbox.”

Cas hurried around the front desk and snatched the paper out of the box, peering at it. It said one word. Acorn. Her face scrunched as she turned over the slip to check if anything was written on the back, but it was blank. “Acorn? What the heck does that mean?”

The cats both stared back with blank expressions on their feline faces.

Groaning, Cas crumpled the paper and threw it in the trash. I guess I’ll have to go visit Minerva tomorrow and see what she’s trying to tell me. I get the feeling she’s not one who would get on the phone and have a conversation with me.”

The front door opened, and people poured into the lobby, led by Brie Loftt. They brought a wave of noise with them, laughing and joking like they were at a sports game or in a bar.
